Help us campaign today for a better tomorrow!
DAWN DOUGLAS has loved being a life-long resident of Pinellas. Dawn’s family moved to Pinellas when she was five years old where she attended Anona Elementary School, Largo Middle, graduating from Largo High School. After graduation, Dawn followed an adventurous path, working at Weeki Wachee Springs as a mermaid for a few years. Realizing that plunging into the chilly spring several times a day wasn’t a long-term career path, Dawn attended SPC at night, later attaining a Bachelor’s Degree in English from University of South Florida.
Dawn has served our community in many ways including as a Girl Scout leader, hospital board member and a representative for Pinellas Classroom Teacher’s Association. Supporting teachers, students and education has led to numerous visits to Tallahassee, lobbying for educational improvements.
WOMEN’S REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS
Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, states are seeking to criminalize abortion and remove a woman’s right to make decisions regarding her own body and reproductive rights. Dawn will fight to codify the Roe v. Wade principles into law, protecting women’s rights. Women must have control of their health care decisions. Let’s fight to keep government out of our doctor’s offices.
VOTING RIGHTS
The most important part of maintaining a democracy is the ability of citizens to vote! A lack of representation in government was the reason our Founding Fathers pledged their “lives, fortunes and sacred honor” to the cause of revolting against tyrannical English rule and to then establish a country dedicated to protecting people’s rights. I pledge to strive for expansion of voting rights, voter registration, more ballot drop-off boxes, protect mail-in ballots and stop the purge of voter rolls for partisan purposes.
EDUCATION
Education in Florida has reached a crisis driven by several factors. The push to proclaim learning “success” through high-stakes testing has strangled classroom creativity. The name of the tests change, but the disastrous reality of testing has not changed or improved education results. Pacing guides, constant testing, and focus on strict standards have throttled our children’s desire to learn. It’s time to follow the example of Finland and eliminate state testing, which resulted in the highest educational outcomes in the world.
Ten years ago, Florida had approximately 1,000 teacher openings and over 10,000 education graduates eager to take those jobs. Coming into this school year Florida had over 9,000 teacher job openings and about 1,000 education graduates to fill that huge gap. The numbers have completely flipped because of the pressures and unrealistic goals structured by the government in Tallahassee. Furthermore, teachers coming into education are staying in the classroom an average of three years before seeking different careers.
Politicians are warning about the dangers of educators teaching “CRT” to students. It simply is not factual. It’s a distraction so families won’t see the reality of the crisis in the classroom. Dawn will fight to solve genuine problems in our schools…. Not smoke and mirrors.
Our state must provide support and funding for earnest students. While college is a great goal, it’s not for everyone. Dawn plans to work to provide adequate funding and more training for the trades back into our schools. Some school districts, like Pinellas, are working to bring technical and trade certifications back into the mainstream.
LGBTQ+ RIGHTS
While in the legislature, Dawn will stand up for gay and transgender rights. Again, the government has no place in the doctor’s office or the right to tell people who they may love. We can’t return to the harsh judgements of fifty years ago or use conversion therapy to push citizens back into “the closet.”
LEGALIZE MARIJUANA
It’s time to legalize the use of cannabis for adults. The U.S. is currently housing over 70% of the world’s prison population, much of that because of drugs and marijuana. Dawn will help change the laws to make cannabis available to adults. Like the Prohibition of alcohol 100 years ago, let’s legitimize marijuana and use the tax money to build a strong educational system and improve our infrastructure.
